Civil servants start 48-hour walkout
Mon, 8 Mar 2010, 09:46:00
Up to 270,000 civil servants have started a two-day strike over redundancy pay which could disrupt Britain's transport hubs and courts. Airports say service at border control will be disrupted, while ports, jobcentres, benefit offices, courts, tax centres and emergency police call centres will also be affected. The walkout by members of the Public and Commercial Services union is the biggest in the public sector in more than two decades. The union says its members could lose a third of their entitlement under government changes to the civil service compensation scheme. Further strikes are planned in the run-up to the general election.
