Consumers urged to shop around and save thousands
January 6, 2010
By Mark Warner

UK consumers stand to make savings of over £4,000 during the course of the next 12 months if they take the advice of Money Supermarket and shop around for the best savings accounts, mortgages, personal loans and credit cards on offer.

The comparison site's personal finance experts also recommend that people weigh up alternative energy suppliers, bundle their household TV, landline and broadband and opt for the best home and car insurance deals to suit their individual needs by, for example, paying for premiums annually or adding an older driver to a car insurance policy.

Site editor Clare Francis says the turn of year is a great trigger for consumers to review their finances.

"We're all feeling the pinch at the moment and for those suffering an extra financial hangover from the festive period, recovery will be all the quicker in 2010 if significant savings are made," she explains. "A New Year's resolution to look for more competitive deals and products could save a household over £4,000 by this time next year."

Anyone who has seen their required mortgage payments decrease over the past year is advised to overpay on their loan to reduce its overall length and interest.
