Council Microchips Could Save On Tax
25/06/2008

A leading bin identification provider has claimed that local authorities which use microchips in bins will save residents money on their council tax.

Advanced Manufacturing and Control Systems (AMCS UK) supplies bin identification solutions to the waste management and recycling industry in Ireland and the UK. In April the company secured a £250,000 contract with SITA UK and Warwick District Council to provide bin identification systems.

More than 75,000 chipped bins have already been supplied by AMCS. The microchips provide the customer with information relating to the number of bins that have been collected. They also allow drivers to record contaminated bins, as well as those that have not been collected and those that contain excess waste.

ACMS has spoken out in defence of microchipped bins after South Norfolk's widely-publicised decision not to continue its microchipeed wheelie bin project.

Austin Ryan, the Business development manager at ACMS said: "A lot of local authorities are heavily criticised for being forward thinking but in adopting this method they will probably reduce council tax bills for their residents. With landfill tax becoming more expensive it is essential that we divert waste from landfill and promote recycling in every possible way".

"The microchip technology is exactly like a supermarket clubcard. It collects information on recycling and waste generation habits. For every 70% of people that want to recycle 30% will not want to. For those 30% that drag everybody down, this system can pinpoint the people that recycle and make the other 30% become better recyclers."
