London afternoon: Stocks steady at lower levels

European shares tumbled Friday morning, tracking the slide on the US and Asian markets, on continuing fears about the state of the economy.<br /><br />The Dow Jones slumped by more 670 points overnight, while the Nikkei suffered a colossal decline Friday with the benchmark marking its seventh day of consecutive losses.<br /><br />Banks are once again leading the fallers, with <b>Santander</b>, <b>Societe Generale</b>, <b>BNP Paribas</b> and <b>Credit Agricole</b> among the worst performing stocks. <br /><br />Across the markets, the German DAX is down 334 points to 4,552, the French CAC is 233 points lower at 3,209, while the Swiss market fell 344 points to 5,453.<br /><br />Energy companies are also in the red after crude dropped to around $86 barrel. <b>Royal Dutch Shell</b>,<b> Eni</b> and<b> Total</b> are all lower.<br /><br /><b>CAC 40 - Fallers</b><br />Societe Generale (GLE) € 52.04 -9.50%<br />Synaxon Ag (PCS) € 3.60 -9.32%<br />Sanofi-Aventis (SAN) € 37.85 -8.42%<br />ArcelorMittal (MTP) € 22.99 -8.39%<br />BNP Paribas (BNP) € 61.38 -8.24%<br />Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) € 1.85 -7.55%<br />GDF Suez (GSZ) € 24.28 -7.50%<br />Saint Gobain (SGO) € 26.85 -7.29%<br />Credit Agricole (ACA) € 12.06 -7.23%<br />Renault (RNO) € 30.65 -6.40%
