On a huge couple of days for results, those companies producing the goods are leading the Footsie.
Business is booming for security group
G4S
, with both sales and profits well ahead in the first half of 2008. First half sales rose by 19.3% to £2.7bn (2007:£2.26bn)with organic growth of 10.5%. Underlying profits rose by 19.4% to £174.8m, from £146.4m, with pre-tax profits up from £96m to £109.4m.
Oil and gas facilities service provider
Petrofac
reported a 31% rise in half year profit and expects to post full year results at the top end of market expectations. Strong demand helped underlying profit rise to $179.2m in the six months ended 30 June, from $137.3m the year before. Revenue was up 49% at $1.6bn. Full year net profit should be between $228m and $262m, Petrofac said in its statement.
Chile-focused copper miner
Antofagasta
enjoyed a better than expected 8.8% rise in net income during the first half thanks to increased copper production and better prices. Net income for the six months ended 30 June rose to $792.8m from $728.4m a year ago on turnover up nearly 24% to $2.41bn. Pre-tax profit jumped 15.3% to $1.66bn.
Enterprise Inn
topped the fallers after JP Morgan Cazenove downgrades Britain's second-biggest pubs group to "underperform" from "neutral". The broker cut its 2009 earnings forecasts by 9% "to reflect the ongoing weakness in the beer market and consequent pressure on licensees."
