Gordon Brown enters BA dispute
Mon, 15 Mar 2010, 12:14:00
The Prime Minister has entered the dispute over planned cabin crew strike at British Airways, calling the action 'unjustified' and 'deplorable'. Cabin crew at British Airways are to go on strike for three days from March 20 and for four days from 27 March. 'It is unjustified, it is deplorable, we shouldn't have a strike,' Gordon Brown said in a radio interview this morning. His intervention comes the day after the transport secretary Lord Adonis spoke against the strike. The dispute is awkward for the government because Unite, the union representing BA cabin crew, is one of the Labour Party's biggest backers. Unite members will still have the chance to vote on a new offer from BA, but the union has advised them not to accept it. The result of the vote is expected this week. Cabin crew voted in favour of taking strike action last month. BA is planning to publish a revised schedule for the planned strike dates today. Citigroup expects the strike to cost BA around £10m to £15m a day. It says the strike is 'unlikely to damage long-term value.'
