Green Grants for Businesses in North East
16/07/2008

Businesses in Teeside and the North East of England have been offered the opportunity to apply for 'green' grants.

Regional development agency One NorthEast, has a budget of around £40m available to assist local organisations in buying and installing renewable energy technologies. This includes technology such as micro-wind turbines, solar panels, ground source heat pumps and biomass.

The grants can be of any amount up to £1m per organisation. Local authorities, businesses, housing associations, schools, and charitable groups are welcome to apply for a grant from One NorthEast, which will put up 50% of the cost of installing 'green' technologies.

The money was allocated to One NorthEast by the Low Carbon Buildings Programme of the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

One NorthEast hopes that housing associations, in particular, will apply for grants. National Housing Federation figures show that 20% of tenants on the North East of England live on just £80 a week, meaning any saving on fuel bills will make a real difference.

Alex Fowler, Energy Specialist at One NorthEast said: "We're really keen to see more uptake from housing associations. We want to raise awareness that here's an opportunity to get a good chunk of money to help the environment and help tenants save cash."
