Holiday prices almost double during school break
August 15, 2011
By Mark Warner

The prices of holidays can almost double during the school break when compared to the same trip during term time.

This is according to recent research from Santander, which found significant differences in holiday costs. A trip to the Algarve in Portugal from London showed the biggest change in price.

A family who holidayed in the week commencing 12 September this year would pay around £1,133 for their trip if they flew from a London airport and stayed in the Hotel Baia Cristal. But the same time taken in the week commencing 22 August would cost £2,174, a massive 92 per cent increase on the term time price.

Andy Smith from Santander suggested that holidaymakers might want to keep a closer eye on their cash if they have to take a trip during the school break. "Families can also reduce costs by cutting out unnecessary expenditure once abroad, such as ensuring they only use a credit card that offers fee-free foreign usage," he stated.

Mr Smith added that the price inflation is a result of high demand, but some of the premiums are “difficult to justify” at a time when families are already struggling with the rising costs of living.
