Insurance is the Best Policy, Says Study

Over 4.5 million UK adults do not insure their homes' content, a recent survey has shown.
A study conducted by Sainsbury’s Home Insurance discovered that millions of Britons are not taking out home contents insurance because they consider it 'unnecessary'. A smaller proportion gave financial constraints as the reason.
The research made the surprising finding that homes in London – where property values and average income are highest - were the most likely to be uninsured, with 22 per cent of houses lacking content insurance. Those in Yorkshire and Humberside – rather less affluent areas – were the best protected, with 96 per cent investing in contents insurance.
This study follows a campaign last week by Direct Line for tenants to liaise with their landlords over property security, and to take out appropriate home content policies. Tenants are entitled to feel safe in their own homes, and the insurance firm urged them to take simple measures to make sure they are not at risk.
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said of the survey’s findings: "It's remarkable given the value of people's home contents that so many do not have cover. Home insurance does not have to be expensive."
