Intellectual property relates to the material created by the mind of a person. Examples of intellectual property include: music, writings, poems, artistic work.

Under the laws of intellectual property a person has certain rights to the work he has created or any invention that he may have thought of. Some governments have given credence to intellectual property for centuries but for others it is a new concept to be protected by law.

The interpretation and observance of intellectual property varies globally.

Intellectual property laws protect the laws that certain artists have when it comes to their creations but may not in fact protect the intellectual work itself. The laws are not actually desiged to protect different forms of subject matter and the way in which the matter was expressed is important in dermining whether is is protected by law.

Some examples of protected intellectual property include: copyrights, patents, trademarks, tradesecrets and distinctive signs. A trade secret is non-public information which details certain knowledge or use of products of proceedures by a business. These are also sometimes known as industrial property because they are usually made for use by a company.
