Internet sales hit 3-year high
Fri, 20 Aug 2010, 07:20:00
Some wet weather last month was behind the quickest rise in
online sales
for three years, according to a new survey. IMRG, an industry body for global e-retailing, said web sales leapt 18% in July compared with the same time last year. They haven't risen that much since 2007. An incredible £5bn was spent shopping on the internet during the month, a record for 2010, says IMRG, with the average UK shopper spending £81 online. Yesterday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) said sales rose by 1.1% in July, well ahead of expectations. And John Lewis today announced a "very solid" 34% surge in sales at it online business for the week to 14 August. "Although online retail sales survived the recession more convincingly than high street sales, the last two years or so have no doubt been shaky at times," said Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Cap Gemini, which publishes the online sales index with IMRG. "It is really encouraging to see growth levels returning to those seen pre-2007 and before consumer confidence was knocked by the financial crisis and the recession."
