M & S recommends travellers’ cheques for holidaymakers

Marks & Spencers has tips for navigating the currency exchange in the run-up to summer hols.

“Collecting a wallet full of notes gives you the first taste of your summer holiday,” said James Yerkess, M & S’s head of travel money, when asked about the visit to the bureau de change many will be taking. Yerkess advised consumers to check their provider carries notes of many different values, citing the impracticality of walking around with a wallet full of hundreds. “Someone may offer a very keen exchange rate, but if you buy 500 euros and they give you five 100 euro notes, it isn’t that useful when you arrive and need to pay a bus or taxi fare,” he added.

Traveller’s cheques, with their user-specific security numbers, are growing in popularity; they allow consumers to avoid taking large amounts of cash or risking losing their own credit cards. Yerkess had nothing to criticise about the cheques: “There is a simple safety mechanism built in and customers appreciate this protection,” he concluded.
