Motorists admit to bad habits behind wheel
July 27, 2010
By Mark Warner

Many motorists are engaging in dangerous habits while driving, recent research has indicated.

According to a study carried out by Co-operative Insurance, some 54 per cent of respondents are driving irresponsibly and risking increases to their car insurance premiums.

Speeding was found to be particularly prevalent, with many admitting that they occasionally exceed the limit.

Around 43 per cent said they would do so if they were running late, with a further 43 per cent saying a bad mood could cause them to drive too fast.

Furthermore, around 53 per cent of UK motorists said they regularly consume soft drinks or eat when on the road, while twelve per cent are still smoking when in charge of their vehicle.

A further seven per cent said they regularly used their mobile phone when behind the wheel, and six per cent even finish getting dressed in the car.

Grant Mitchell, of Co-operative Insurance, said: "Taking a sip of a drink or a quick bite of a sandwich while driving may seem harmless.

"However, the consequence of taking your full concentration off the road could result in a road traffic accident which could change lives forever."
