Motorists reminded about forthcoming car insurance law change
February 23, 2011
By Liz Parks

The DVLA is reminding motorists that a new law being rolled out this spring means that their car must be kept insured, unless they have let the DVLA know that it will be off the road.

Registered car-owners will need to be able to show that they are insured at all times. Exceptions to this will be for those who have notified the DVLA through a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) or those whose car has been off-road since before January 1998 (when SORNS came in). However, should the latter group wish to drive their car again, they will need car insurance.

Seasonal vehicle-users, such as caravan-owners, are being particularly reminded of the law change as they may be used to being uninsured for part of the year. Those failing to comply face a fine, clamping or even court proceedings.

The DVLA will work in partnership with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) to identify car-owners who don’t have the correct car insurance.

Neil Drane, MIB’s Head of Motor Insurance Database Services, said, “The change in law is a stepping up of enforcement activity, so that not only those vehicles driven without insurance will be caught.

"Now the registered keeper must make sure that their vehicle is insured all the time. And if it is, then they need not be concerned. The DVLA and MID will be systematically checked, so that the levels of uninsured driving are reduced even further," he added.
