Motorists are being encouraged to shop around for the best car insurance deals before making any decisions about reducing their level of cover.
This comes after a survey by online insurance firm Your Cover found that a tenth of motorists plan to cut back on their car insurance cover this year in a bid to save money.
However, Your Cover is urging consumers to do their research first, advising that they may be able to get the same cover for less money. Half of those surveyed agreed that shopping around online makes it easier to find lower-cost insurance.
Survey respondents indicated that they plan to cut back on legal protection and courtesy cars (nine per cent) and increase their excess (seven per cent). Extras such as legal protection are often added on to a policy automatically but Your Cover says that some insurers may be flexible. However, it also warned customers against ‘scorpion insurers’, whose policies have a ‘sting in the tail'.
Andy James, head of direct customer marketing at Your Cover, said that whilst a policy may seem cheap, people should be aware of charges such as cancellation fees, mid-term adjustments and fees for paying by direct debit.
