MPs back personal finance lessons
21/06/2007

A parliamentary motion calling for schools across the UK to offer personal finance qualifications has been backed by more than 80 MPs.

Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour MPs were among those who signed the motion that is aiming to address the issues surrounding Britain's perceived lack of financial capability.

Under the terms of the proposals, financial education would be offered as a standalone subject in UK schools, which it is hoped might make young Britons more able to deal with money-related matters.

Liberal Democrat MP Julia Goldsworthy tabled the motion, she said: "Low levels of financial capability can be remedied by ensuring all students have access to meaningful financial education.

"However … there is currently a real lack of financial education in schools and that's why we are calling on the government to take such action."

Research from Alliance & Leicester recently revealed that more than 80 per cent of Britons aged between 16 and 21 are confident of owning their own property before they reach the age of 30.
