A new report from Which? magazine has found that older female drivers are paying more for their car insurance.
Which? carried out the research by getting two sets of quotes from a price comparison website; the first for a single 60-year-old woman and the second for a man with the same details.
The research discovered that insurance providers are charging up to £80 more to older female motorists compared with their male counterparts. In fact, the price quoted for the female driver was more than for the man in every case, with the difference ranging from just £4.20 to £80 for annual cover.
The opposite, however, is true for younger drivers where men are charged much more than women. Male drivers aged between 17 and 25 have the most expensive car insurance bills, while young female drivers are charged much less for their policies.
A spokesman for an insurance firm replied to the Which? findings by arguing that gender is just one of the factors that affects car insurance costs. He added that premiums are based solely on the level of risk each driver poses in terms of the likelihood of them making a claim.
