Online banking on the increase
September 30, 2010
By Rachel Constantine

An increasing number of customers are using online banking to manage their current accounts, new figures have indicated.

The growing popularity of smartphone devices such as the iPhone and Blackberry has been a factor in more people using such services.

According to a study conducted by eDigitalResearch and IRMG, 65 per cent of consumers regularly pay their bills online, while 55 per cent said they were happy to transfer funds via the internet.

Some 78 per cent of customers also said they felt better deals on products such as current accounts could be found with online research.

However, some people still prefer using a traditional high-street branch, with 57 per cent saying they value the personal interaction.

Brian Capon, assistant director of media at the British Banker's Association, said branches will still be around in ten years’ time, but noted that demand for online services had increased with banks responding accordingly.

"Banks do respond very quickly to different ways that customers want them to deliver services. There are apps that you can get for your iPhone. It'll all be driven by the customer," he commented.
