An
online banking scam which is targeting users in the UK and stealing personal information has been uncovered.
It is thought that the botnet program – which was discovered by the security outfit Trusteer – has already affected 100, 000 computers across the globe.
Fraudsters based in Eastern Europe are collecting personal details from personal computers, such as log in details, passwords and
credit card numbers.
Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer, warned that the cyber criminals are "very familiar" with banking systems in the UK.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said an allegation had been made and they were now working in conjunction with Trusteer and UK Payments to prevent further fraudulent attacks.
Online fraud is becoming increasingly commonplace in the UK, which is often targeted by criminals due to its developed banking sector.
A spokesperson for UK Payments said: "In the highly unlikely event that any one of the 23 million UK customers who bank online is an innocent victim as a result of this attack they can expect to get their money back."
