Powergen hikes gas prices
01/03/2006

British homeowners have been urged to shop around for the best gas and electricity deals following the latest price hike by a major supplier.

Powergen, the second-biggest energy supplier in Britain, has announced that it is to raise gas bills for domestic customers by a record 24.4 per cent, while the cost of electricity is to grow by 18.4 per cent.

This comes after British Gas revealed it is to raise gas prices by 22 per cent, while the cost of Scottish Power's gas will increase by 15 per cent, as suppliers respond to soaring wholesale costs.

"We shielded our customers from the impact of these costs for as long as possible and we continue to ensure that our prices are highly competitive," stated Nick Horler, managing director of Powergen Retail.

"In addition, we'll be investing billions of pounds in the UK over the coming years to help ensure that people's lights stay on and that their homes remain warm," he added.

Powergen's price hikes will come into effect from March 10th, although certain customers, such as pensioners and prepayment users, will not experience them until March 31st.
