RBS digital wizard jumps ship to Virgin
June 29, 2011
By Caroline Johnson

Christopher Morson, digital director of the Royal Bank of Scotland, has moved to Virgin Money to work on its online banking arm.

Virgin has created an entirely new position for Morson, that of the ‘head of digital development’. He will be focusing on making Virgin more accessible through the internet, whether by Facebook, mobile phone or Twitter, allowing customers to check on and manage their finances no matter where they are. He performed a similar role at RBS and Natwest.

This is not the only way Virgin Money is expanding. Morson’s new role comes on the heels of the May announcement that Virgin will be bidding for the up-for-sale branches of both Lloyds and Northern Rock. If it gets either, Virgin Money will be a high street presence after 16 years of being exclusively online, providing real competition for the likes of RBS.

The bank is rumoured to be approaching possible investors for funds in the lead-up to the auction. Virgin also recently assigned Dave Angel, formerly of Northern Rock, to the development of a new price strategy for current accounts, deposits and mortgages.
