Ryanair to scrap Belfast City flights
Tue, 31 Aug 2010, 14:26:00
Budget airline
Ryanair
will scrap all flights from George Best Belfast City airport at the end of October in protest at a failure to agree the runway extension originally planned for 2008. The public inquiry into the promised runway extension has been further delayed, and Ryanair is not prepared to wait until at least 2012 for it to appear, it said Tuesday. Michael O'Leary's low cost carrier has been operating out of Belfast since 2007, but only runs five flights to the UK because of the short runway. More routes were promised once the extension went ahead. "It makes no sense for Ryanair to continue to invest in Belfast City, operating restricted routes with less than full payloads between Belfast and other UK airports unless there is clear and immediate prospect of Ryanair being enabled to safely operate longer European routes from Belfast City Airport and for this we need the runway extension," moaned O'Leary. "Sadly we have better alternative airports elsewhere in the UK and Europe." Katy Best, business development director at the airport said she was confident another airline would be found to replace Ryanair.
