Sainsbury's: Thousands not paying for car insurance

Over 168,000 people between the ages of 17 and 24 admit that they have driven without sufficient car insurance in the past 12 months, new research reveals.
The 35 to 44-year-old category also has more than 115,000 drivers who have used their vehicles without holding all of the relevant car finance documentation, according to Sainsbury's car insurance.
Furthermore, the research suggests that 1.1 million people would be tempted to drive without car insurance if the premiums were to increase significantly.
Richard Clark, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, states that honest drivers, who do pay their car insurance fees, can end up being punished by the minority who do not.
"Uninsured motorists are a serious problem and we estimate that it adds over 6.5 per cent to premiums," says Mr Clark.
"It's not only dangerous, but it's also unfair to expect honest drivers to pick up the tab and we would urge those motorists who are tempted to break the law to consider trying to reduce the cost of motoring without dropping insurance."
This can be done by shopping around for car finance, car sharing, downgrading their vehicle or not driving at all, Mr Clark added.
Earlier this month, the AA British Insurance Index showed that car insurance premiums have risen for the second consecutive quarter.
