Santander extends Zero Current Account reach
March 1, 2010
By Liz Parks

Santander has announced that it has extended the eligibility of its fee-free account, which is the first current account of its type in the UK.

From 8 March 2010, the Zero Current Account will be open to customers who open a Santander investment product or already hold one. Currently, the account is only open to Santander mortgage customers.

As a result of the new eligibility rules, the Zero Current Account is now available to 22 million current account customers in the UK. Some 2.5 million people already have Santander mortgage or investment accounts and can immediately take up the fee-free account if they wish.

Director of Retail Products at Santander, Vim Maru, explained, "millions of customers could switch tomorrow. I encourage every one of them to visit a Santander branch, visit us online or call us, to discuss how they can take advantage of our free switching service and start to save money on their banking by moving to the Santander Zero Current Account."

He continued, "extending the eligibility to allow many more people access to fee-free banking is another example of our new approach; one based on simplicity: the more business you do with us, the more we will offer you in return."
