Save £500 a Month by Getting Healthy
20/08/2008

Bupa has issued tips designed to help people save money by getting healthy. Exercising outdoors, growing fruit and vegetables, quitting smoking and drinking tap water instead of coffee are the money-saving health measures suggested by the private health insurance company.

Bupa claims that a person could save nearly £500 a month by following these measures, while reducing their risk of stokes, heart disease and other health problems.

A person who gives up a 20-a-day smoking habit will save £170 a month. Drinking tap water instead of buying a full fat latte every day will save £50 a month, with the health benefits including better sleep and weight management.

Growing one's own fruit and vegetables saves £10 a month and the process of gardening provides free exercise. A recent report in The Guardian suggests that the market for cheap fruit and vegetables is increasing, as people are less confident about spending extra money on organic produce.

While going to the gym is generally good for a person's health, at up to £80 a month it's not a cheap way of getting fit. Walking and taking the stairs are both free ways of staying in shape. Additionally, cycling to work can save up to £150 a month in public transport costs.
