Scottish Widows: More women saving in secret
29/08/2006

More women are becoming secret savers, with those from the midlands most likely to hide their savings from their partners, new research reveals.

The reason for keeping this financial information secret is because women are seeking their own independence before starting a relationship, according to investment company Scottish Widows.

The figures show that nearly one woman in ten is starting a savings account without informing their partner.

In total, over 1.5 million women are creating their own savings separately from their spouses or boyfriends.

With women from the midlands most likely to be financially independent, those from Humberside and East Anglia are the least likely to start savings separate to their partner, the research indicates.

Anne Young, senior marketing manager at Scottish Widows, said it is important to financially plan for the future.

"Our survey findings show that there is a trend for women to build their own savings separate from their partners," said Ms Young.

"In today's ever changing society, jobs, marriages and money come with no guarantees, so planning ahead is essential."

Research earlier this month from cash machine operator Link suggests men and women have different financial habits when withdrawing money.

Men are more likely to withdraw more money less regularly, while women are more likely to regularly take out smaller sums of cash, the research suggests.
