Tuesday preview: Clothes sellers rue mild weather

Christmas update season for the retailers is getting into full swing with heavyweight <b>Marks and Spencer</b> set to weigh in on Tuesday, along with smaller rivals <b>Debenhams</b> and <b>Dunelm</b>.
 
 <b>Marks & Spencer</b> (M&S) has a bit of reputational repair to perform after it announced in November that underlying sales had dipped in its second quarter - its first reversal in two years.
 
 UBS is predicting M&S will announce a 1% like-for-like (LFL) sales increase for General Merchandise and a 2% LFL increase in Food. 
 
 The same broker is tipping a 1% decline will be announced by department store <b>Debenhams</b>, as the company rues the elongated summer and mild winter which meant that sales of winter clothing ranges did not get off to the best of starts. 
 
 Turning to the economy, but staying on the retail scene, the British Retail Consortium's <b>sales monitor</b> for December is expected to show a 0.5% year-on-year increase, after showing a 1.6% decline in November. 
 
 The Royal Institution of Chartered Accountants issues its <b>house price balance</b> in which it measures the proportion of solicitors reporting price increases against those reporting price declines. The balance - the former constituency minus the latter - is expected to widen to -19 from November's -17.
