UK business owners often out of contact
29/04/2008

According to recent research carried out by T-Mobile, most small to medium business people in the UK spend at least 5 hours out of the office every week, or 33 working days a year.

Additionally, small business people are actually out of contact with their office for over two months a year. This is a potential issue for the viability and growth of the business, as the head decision maker is often needed when he or she is not about. Small and medium businesses are more dependent on their leader to make quick and important decisions than larger businesses that have a spread of upper level management in place.

The survey looked at the challenges faced by owners of SMEs, when looking at balancing their staff’s requirement for mobile communications and the increasing cost of provision.

74% of survey respondents said that it was critically important for owners, directors and senior managers to stay in contact with each other and with employees and customers.

But two out of five said that they were paying too much for their mobile phones.

Two thirds of respondents had no system in place to monitor the usage of mobile phones by employees, specifically when international calls were being made from the handsets. The cost implications of this are significant, as mobile is no longer just about phone calls, but includes email, web and other data sharing.
