Motorists in the UK have been warned to ensure their vehicles are fully prevented against theft in the wake of rising car crime.
According to recent research carried out by M&S
Car Insurance, 56 per cent of drivers have fallen victim to such incidents.
However, 40 per cent of respondents admitting to not always using their vehicle’s security system when parked, while 43 per cent even said they have left their car unlocked in the past.
Andrew Ferguson, M&S head of general insurance, said it is essential for motorists to fully protect their vehicle, not only to prevent theft but to ensure that subsequent claims on
car insurance are not invalidated.
"During the summer months, many drivers unwind windows and leave roofs open – it's important to make sure the vehicle is secure when unattended," he said.
According to the findings, 12 per cent of drivers had returned to their car to find paintwork deliberately damaged, eight per cent reported smashed windscreens, while another eight per cent had belongings stolen from inside the vehicle.
