Welsh devolution 'has provided small business opportunities'

The devolution of Wales has provided many opportunities which, if taken up effectively, could see small businesses driving a "Celtic tiger economy", according to one expert.

Russell Lawson from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) states that although devolution has provided a number of good opportunities for business, more needs to be done to ensure that strong, accountable public institutions are formed to tackle economic inequality and get the most from the Welsh population.

Writing in the Western Mail, the expert commented that the government in Wales is starting to "understand" the importance of small businesses to the economy, which account for 99 per cent of all enterprises and support almost half of Welsh jobs.

"[The Welsh assembly's] long-term strategy, built on homegrown businesses and on our human capital, should pay dividends in building a Wales with the potential to become a Celtic tiger," Mr Lawson stated.

He also noted that a "good start" had been made in forming learning initiatives designed to encourage job skills.
