Winter motorists warned over car insurance
30/10/2006

Drivers need to ensure their car insurance policies are up to date as the darker night-time conditions draw in, it has been advised.

According to Phil Loney, managing director at Lloyds TSB Insurance, "preparation is everything" for motorists during the winter months.

The managing director also indicates that the period between 15:00 GMT and 18:00 GMT is a particular "danger zone", as motorists will not be used to the darker conditions.

Research from Lloyds TSB Insurance shows that last year, in the months following the end of British summer time, car insurance claims rose by 18 per cent.

The insurance arm of the high-street bank predicts that the increase in claims will be just as much this year.

"The colder weather combined with the darker nights can be a lethal cocktail on the roads," warns Mr Loney.

"Even though the clocks go back every year, drivers still seem to be ill-prepared. Many are not ready to face the hazards of dark winter evenings and risk minor accidents - or worse - as a result."

He adds that car insurance customers should be particularly vigilant during the afternoon following the clock change, making sure their policies cover all eventualities.

Earlier this month, Lloyds TSB Insurance warned consumers that the threat of rising tides could increase home insurance claims in the UK's coastal towns.
