Woman Fined £16k for File Sharing
21/08/2008

Firms are cracking down on the practice of file sharing that is depriving them of millions of pounds worth of copyright royalties.

A British woman has just been fined £16k for sharing an online pinball game. The woman is believed to have obtained a copy of Dream Pinball 3D, which is owned by Topware Interactive, and then shared it with other individuals through peer-to-peer networks.

Such networks enable users to share files with each other and bypass the system of paying fees to the copyright owners.

Internet users may want to think again before they engage in file-sharing: a London based law firm has revealed they have been instructed by clients to pursue other offenders. Davenport Lyons says the firm is working on about 100 cases of illegal file sharing, and they are aiming to recover substantial damages on behalf of their clients.

File sharing has become a big problem. Copyright owners, Government and ISPs are all trying to find a solution, but they could have their work cut out for them: it's estimated that about six million people share files every year.
