Football fans attending World Cup games have been advised to be aware of cash limits in South Africa.
According to estimations, English fans are likely to spend around £135 million during the popular sporting event.
However, visitors entering the country are only permitted to bring 5,000 SA rand (£450) in with them, making the use of a UK
current account for additional funds highly likely.
Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, director of banking at Santander, said those travelling to South Africa to watch matches could save money by choosing their
current account carefully.
Many of today's accounts on offer incorporate a
foreign exchange fee, as well as an additional fee for using cash machines outside of the UK.
Ms Audhlam-Gardiner noted that such extra costs could be avoided with the Santander Zero
Current Account, which is free from such extra charges.
"People should be aware that they can save themselves a lot of money if they have a debit card that allows free ATM access and no charges on debit card transactions worldwide," she pointed out.
According to Santander, some 47 per cent of UK travellers withdraw three-quarters of their spending money from cash machines when overseas.
